Youth Leadership Development
Freedom Fellowship
The flagship youth development initiative at CFS is the Freedom Fellowship program. Freedom Fellows, ages 14 – 17, have an opportunity to ask questions about their lives, to see the connection between the means and the ends of creating change, and to develop as agents of social change.
In 2010, the Freedom Fellowship will consist of three Leadership in Action (LIA) weeks:
July 6 – 9 FOR ALUMNI ONLY: “A Lease on Life: Community Health and Wellness”
July 12 – 16 “Killing Us Softly: Gender Roles, Sexism, and the Media”
July 26 – 30 “The Cradle to Prison Pipeline: Criminalization of Youth in Society”
Youth can apply to more than one LIA, but can only participate in one. Each week will be followed by six months of mentoring and training during which youth – with the support of an adult staff and volunteers – create and implement a collective activism goal plan aimed at promoting justice in their communities. The plans must include four components completed at different times throughout the year:
1. Team Mission Statement
2. Team Action Goal
3. Set of strategies
4. Action and Reflection
To support this work, youth will meet at CFS every other week from August to December. Youth in the Freedom Fellowship LIA program receive a modest stipend for their participation.

Youth Leadership Board
The Youth Leadership Board (YLB) is the youth decision-making arm of CFS. It is made up of youth ages 14 – 18 who have actively participated in CFS programs for at least six months. The purpose of the group is to inform, shape and evaluate youth programs at CFS. YLB members are responsible all aspects of their meetings including facilitation, goal-setting, creating agendas, taking minutes, and follow-up. In addition, members assist in the recruitment process for our Freedom Fellowship program, participate in interviews of new staff, serve as representatives for CFS at events and media opportunities, and participate in professional development opportunities.
The YLB meets twice a month from September – May at the Chicago Freedom School Center for Social Change in downtown Chicago. Applications for joining the YLB will be available in September 2009.
Alternative Spring Break
This year, CFS will host a 4-day spring break social justice immersion program that will engage youth from around Chicago in examining the role of race and class in our society. Participants will have the opportunity to meet activists and organizers from around Chicago, reflect on their own position in society, and make plans for actions they can take to create a more just world. We will also discuss how Stephen Colbert uses satire to bring attention to glaring inequalities and what it means to be an ally to those in struggle.
